When its time to choose a freelancer for your project there are a few things you need to know before making your decision. All these factors are here to help you get the most of the outsourcing web site you have chosen and save you money and time. After all choosing the wrong freelancer can cost you a lot of money and a lot of time.
What is the worst that can happen when choosing a freelancer?
Probably the worst thing that can happen when you hire a freelancer is when you don't do your background check and the freelancer takes off with your money and does not give you a complete product. Either that or the freelancer does give you a product but its useless because its not what you want or the quality just isn't there.
One of the worst things is when you hire a freelancer and what they deliver is horrible. When this happens the only thing to do is go back to the drawing board and try again or keep hassling with the freelancer till he gets it right.
Depending on what type of project you are having created this can take days, weeks, or months. Sometime even close to a year or more depending on how good of a choice you made when you choose your freelancer.
What can you do to NOT make the mistakes of choosing the WRONG freelancer?
There are a number of things you can do to make your decision a better one. Learn what my top recommendations are making the right choice when you choose a freelancer from an outsourcing web site.
- Check the rating of the freelancer: Most outsourcing web sites allow each of the freelancers to be rated by their customers. This is one sure way to see how well that freelancer stacks up to the others. If the freelancer has quite a few negative ratings this is a definite sign that you should NOT choose this freelancer. Top freelancers usually have a rating of 8.0 or higher. Most of the times its not hard to find a freelancer with a rating of 8.5 or higher.
- Be clear on "exactly" what you want: Make sure the freelancer understands your requirements. 90% of projects that go wrong is because the creator or the project did not specify "exactly" what they wanted and the freelancer did not clearly understand the requirements.
- What you pay for is what you get: Most of the times trying to save a few bucks can hurt you when it comes to product creation. Don't skimp on the price. Don't just pick the lowest bidder. The serious freelancers know they are worth what they ask for. Do your research and then make your decision but remember you get what you pay for!
- Contact should be easy: Make sure the freelancer you choose is easy to contact. When you are creating your project make sure your specify that the chosen freelancer must send daily updates or be available via phone, instant messenger, or skype...etc Usually when you outsource you will be hiring someone from overseas (if you are in the USA) and that person will be awake when your sleeping and vice versa. Make sure that you can coordinate times to discuss the work to make changes or fixes on a daily basis.
Remember to do your research, clearly specify exactly what you need done, have an acceptable budget and make arrangements to have daily meetings. These will guarantee you a higher success rate of receiving a finished product that you can be proud of. Always takes these four things into consideration when it comes to choosing a freelancer.
